Where Did Brooklyn Style Pizza Originate?
Brooklyn style pizza, also called New York style, originated in New York City in the early 1900s. Infamously, Lombardi’s Pizza was the first-ever United States pizzeria. It was founded by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy in 1905.
It is possible that other New York pizzerias existed before Lombardi’s. But, many became famous under someone else’s name. Certain research tends to suggest that a man named Filippo Milone was actually the first to start New York pizzerias.
Whole pizza pies at Lombardi’s sold for 5 cents a pie. Many people could not afford a whole pie, and that is how pizza-by-the-slice was born.
Italian immigrants from Italy’s Campania region are to thank for the United State’s introduction to pizza. By the 1930s and 40s, New York pizza began to spread outside the Italian-American community.
What is Brooklyn Style Pizza?
Brooklyn style pizza is different from Chicago and Detroit styles. But how? For starters, Brooklyn style pizza is cut into large, wide slices. Since these slices are so large, they are often folded in half by the crust.
The hand-tossed crust is the defining characteristic of Brooklyn style pizza. A Brooklyn crust is crispier and lighter. The crust is thin enough that it doesn’t overpower the toppings.
Brooklyn style pizza features a light layer of tomato sauce covered with mozzarella cheese. The best part is, the toppings are customizable. Leave it plain with cheese, or add pepperoni, sausage, or vegetables.
For comparison, Chicago style pizza has a very thick crust. It layers cheese at the bottom, fillings in the middle, and sauce on top. Pies and slices are smaller than Brooklyn style pizza.
What Is It Like Today?
While Brooklyn style pizza has remained classic for the most part, it has received modern adaptations. Traditionally, Brooklyn style crust gets made from high-gluten bread flour.
Today, gluten-free options are often necessary. At Proper Pizza, we offer our pizzas with the option of a gluten-free pizza crust. Additionally, we are able to accommodate vegans with vegan cheese and vegetable toppings.
Our gluten-free and vegan pizza options maintain the integrity of the Brooklyn style tradition.
